Courses for PhD candidates in Fall Semester 2022

  • NEW: You can book modules without time pressure - no more "first come - first serve".
  • NEW: You can "request" a course place anytime from 17 August (10am) until 30 August (midnight).
    • Modules and places can be requested within this 'request period'. For the allocation of places, it is NOT relevant at which time within the REQUEST PERIOD the request is made. Places for our modules are allocated randomly. You will find further deadlines here. You will find the deadlines and all exceptions in the course catalogue for each module.

    • Courses can only be booked online using the UZH student portalModule booking in three steps:

Search and select in the course catalogue

Book or request in the Noted Items & Module Booking app

Review and modify in My Modules app

  • In the respective course description, you can see whether a course is offered as a in-person or online course.
  • Please review the conditions of participation before booking a module.

Registration

  • Graduate Campus courses for PhD candidates are aimed primarily at PhD candidates matriculated at the University of Zurich and are free of charge. If you are not matriculated at UZH then you must apply for  Module Mobility in order to book a module.
  • NEW as of HS22: Courses can only be booked online using the UZH student portal. You can only book modules during the module booking period and after paying your semester fees.
  • If you have a problem booking a module or have questions concerning course content, please contact us by email.
  • If you have a technical problem (e.g. an issue with your browser), please contact  Technical Support.

Cancellation

  • After the canceling deadline: If an excuse is submitted without being prompted by email to kurse@grc.uzh.ch, Graduate Campus will cancel your booking. An email sent only to the instructor is not valid.
  • An unexcused absence (so-called "no-show") leads to a lost course place and takes the place of another participant away and is therefore prohibited. Without a written apology send to the Graduate Campus before the start of the course, the booked but not attended course is recorded as a "Fail" on your transcript of records. An excuse given only to the instructor is not valid.
  • Courses of the School for Transdisciplinary Studies can only be canceled before the UZH-wide cancellation deadline, a subsequent cancellation is not possible. In case of absence without timely cancellation, the course is considered as "failed".

Assessment

Each course has an assessment requirement which must be fulfilled, regardless of whether an ECTS credit is needed or not. Complete participation is a part of this assessment.

If you do not complete the assessment, the course will be recorded as a "Fail" on your transcript of records.

ECTS

An ECTS credit can only be be awarded upon successful course completion and perfect attendance. You must attend the entire course to gain an ECTS credit, regardless of the reason for absence and without exceptions.

Concerning the number and allocation of ECTS credits, the following rules apply:

  • A course consists of a workload of 1 ECTS credits, i.e. 30 hours, including independent study and course participation
  • Each course has an assessment requirement which must be fulfilled
  • Attendance of all course sessions (complete participation).

The individual faculties decide whether or not academic achievements can be considered a curricular element of your doctoral studies.

Course participants are not automatically entitled to have a completed course recognized or considered as a part of their doctoral studies. For this reason, doctoral candidates are strongly encouraged to determine whether or not a course is recognized as a part of their doctoral studies before registering for a university-wide course. Ideally, the PhD candidate should discuss whether the recognition of courses with his or her supervisor before registering for a course.

Academic achievements are recognized as such if the ECTS credits earned appear on the transcript of records.

The credits earned in a completed course are said to be valid if they count towards the completion of the candidate’s doctorate, and the candidate is not required to repeat the course (by substitution). The credits earned in a valid equivalence appear as such on the transcript of records.
