Fundraising strategies for successful academic careers


University members are supposed to raise funds for their own purposes (fellowships) or for their scientific work as a group (projects). The knowledge about fundraising for science is crucial for proceeding in academia, particularly if a leading position is the target. The knowledge about national, trans-national and international research funding is fundamental. It is moreover the starting point to successfully obtain third-party funds and to elaborate a sustainable funding portfolio of a research team.

The course “Fundraising Strategies for Successful Academic Careers” provides an overview of the most important national and international funding programmes and offers an introduction to research funding. The participants will get to know the funding opportunities as well as their specific requirements.

They will gather the basics of successful fund acquisition and will study means for improving rejected proposals. Approaches for specific marketing and communication of individual research will furthermore be discussed, mainly in terms of using Social Media, publications and project databases. The added value of grant writing and peer reviewed evaluation will be explained and thus researchers highly motivated to seriously develop their own refined acquisition strategy.

During the two training days the following topics will be addressed:

  • Introduction to public national and international funding bodies (SNF, CTI, Horizon2020, Cost, etc.) and private foundations
  • Specific elements required in proposals
  • Sources for information research & support structures in Switzerland
  • Success factors for proposals
  • How to attract an evaluator’s attention for my proposal
  • Support tools to elaborate an innovative and beyond the state-of-art content of a proposal
  • Structured scientific networking by reviewing publication/project data bases, becoming active in social networks and by contacting keen researchers in person
  • Basics about Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) e.g. Memorandum of Understanding, Consortium Agreement, Contracts, etc.
