Good research practice

Content

Good research practices are crucially important and aim to improve the quality and reproducibility of empirical research. Relevant topics are covered such as study design, preregistration, reporting guidelines for various study types, statistical power, bias, and more. We will discuss the main causes of irreproducible research (publication bias, low power, p-hacking, and HARKing) and provide solutions with a special focus on preregistration and open science principles, and how these can be implemented into everyday research practice. The course will also cover an introduction to the Open Science Framework (OSF). For further information on reproducibility, visit www.crs.uzh.ch.

Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will know:

  • what are the causes of irreproducible research.

  • best practices related to research design, statistical power, and bias.

  • what is open science and how to document research output.

  • how to preregister a study, and learn a new publishing scheme, registered reports.

  • how to manage research in the Open Science Framework (OSF).
